Gellar began her career at a young age, making her film debut at six in the television film An Invasion of Privacy (1983). She gained prominence with her role as Kendall Hart on the soap opera All My Children (1993–1995), earning a Daytime Emmy Award for her performance.

Gellar achieved international fame as Buffy Summers in the cult classic series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003). Her portrayal earned her a Saturn Award and nominations for a Golden Globe and a Television Critics Association Award. With films grossing over $570 million worldwide, her notable credits include I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), Scream 2 (1997), Cruel Intentions (1999), Scooby-Doo (2002), The Grudge (2004), TMNT (2007), and Do Revenge (2022).

Beyond her film career, Gellar has starred in The CW's Ringer (2011–2012), CBS's The Crazy Ones (2013–2014), and Paramount+'s Wolf Pack (2023).
